The first round robin in two leagues doubled up as the BUSA qualifier for the south, with Bristol, Oxford and Southampton 1 taking the top 3. Sevenoaks convincingly won the second league. The groups were reseeded into gold and silver leagues with a sail off seeing Cambridge Renegades entering the gold along with Spinnaker Scallywags. South West Area Qualifier 9 teams arrived at Spinnaker SC on a frosty, windless morning to compete for 3 of the remaining 6 spaces at the UKTRA finals in March. All the talk was of when to re-run the event if the wind failed to materialise. After a 2 hour wait a fitful breeze stirred, and not long afterwards the first races were started. Despite the best efforts to run a complete 9 team league (8 races each), the wind gave up after all teams had completed 5 or 6 matches, leaving teams to be ranked by their % win rate. | Published : 24/01/2006

Is this the biggest sailing event in the country? A total of 282 competitors completed 238 races over the weekend of 12/13 November in the RYA Junior and RYA Youth Team Racing Championships hosted by Grafham SC.
There has been a big surge of interest in youth and junior team racing recently, with school teams racing getting stronger and clubs such as Hamble River and Poole YC club organising their own fleets of boats. Each race has 6 boats (3 boats for each team), and is "simply" a case of making sure your team scores less points than the other team in the short 10-15 minute race. | Published : 24/11/2005
First Qualifier for RYA National Team Racing Champs this weekend As fleet racing starts to wind down, so the team racing season winds up.
The first of five qualifiers takes place this Saturday at Bough Beech SC. This "south-east" qualifier will be sailed in the fleet of fibreglass fireflies owned (and generously loaned) by Sevenoaks School.
At least nine teams will be trying to qualify for three places at the RYA National Team Racing Championship Finals for the Prince Philip Trophy also to be held at Bough Beech SC on 18 and 19th March next year.
Competition will be fierce with the West Kirby Hawks and Tabby Cats (an ex-Cambridge Uni team) both finalists at this years' Oxford Magnum. On that occasion West Kirby Hawks came away with the bubbly (literally!).
Joining them, and with strong team racing histories of their own, are teams from "Society" (the Oxford & Cambridge Sailing Society), Southampton Uni, Sennokians (a team from Sevenoaks School), Bough Beech, Chiddingtone, Tonbridge School and Kings School.
Further qualifiers are being held around the country at West Kirby, Wirral (10 Dec), Farmoor Reservoir, Oxford (7 Jan), Spinnaker, Hampshire (22 Jan) and Bartley, Birmingham (29 Jan).
Three will qualify from each event, to be joined at the final by the winners of the Wilson (New Forest Pirates, the winners of the RYA Youths, Itchenor and a team from the host club.

BUSA Team Racing Qualifiers Sixty University teams from all over England will be competing in the BUSA Team Racing Qualifiers this weekend at five fantastic venues including Grafham, Farmoor, West Kirby, Spinnaker and Chew Valley Lake. Each of the teams will be striving to gain a place at the inaugural BUSA Team Racing Championship in April 2006.
This year BUSA is trying out a new format for qualifying for the Finals. By reducing the number of qualifiers and by making each qualifier longer and with more teams, BUSA hope that the standard of team racing within universities will improve and also allow more time in the calendar for training and other events.
The further seven places in the Finals will be confirmed at the Playoffs in March where 14 teams from the qualifiers will have a second chance to gain a slot in the Finals.
With the weather looking cold and windy for the weekend, the committee wish all teams the best of luck for the event.
Feedback from the events is always useful, so please contact your area rep.

The weather was cold and clear with a gentle force 2 – perfect conditions for this exciting competition, which was established in the early 1990s and awards the victors a Magnum of Bollinger champagne. Making The Cut - Day Five NEWPORT, RI (September 30, 2005) ? There was a lot on the line as day five of the 2005 Grey Goose ISAF Team Racing World Championship got down to business on Narragansett Bay. After four days and over 200 races, the 16 teams representing 10 nations were starting the knock out rounds that would eliminate some, after seeding six teams directly into the quarterfinals. Putting a crimp in the style of the New York Yacht Club's (NYYC) Race Committee was a light northwesterly breeze that ultimately died and resulted in the postponement of racing for several hours during the mid-afternoon. With temperatures on the chilly side, the complete lack of wind made it feel warmer for the substantial spectator crowd gathered along the Goat Island shoreline and who got an opportunity to work on their tans during the lull in the action. | Published : 01/10/2005
Blown out after 10 races - Day Four The New York Yacht Club's (NYYC) Race Committee got the racing rotation underway promptly at 9:00 a.m. on day four of the 2005 Grey Goose ISAF Team Racing World Championship in a valiant effort to beat the wind gods. A weather prediction that included high wind warnings for most of coastal Rhode Island ultimately came to fruition, but only after 10 races were successfully completed in a breeze that was building to 25 knots. | Published : 30/09/2005
Putting the Hammer Down - Day Three NEWPORT, RI (September 28, 2005) – Turning Newport harbor into a mirror, a light northerly wind turned calm this morning and kept racers ashore for several hours at New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court on day three of the 2005 Grey Goose ISAF Team Racing World Championship. Around noon when the breeze filled, the race committee was able to keep a consistent pace of racing in the seven knots of breeze by shrinking the course length in order to keep races at seven minutes duration, while working to complete 56 races for the gold and silver fleets. The lighter conditions, maxing out at 10 knots, is plenty of breeze for Vanguard 15s and was not expected to significantly impact the series standings as the boat’s rigs had been "powered up" in anticipation of the lighter air. | Published : 29/09/2005
Everyone Loses Sometime Day Two NEWPORT, RI (September 27, 2005) – Competitors at the 2005 Grey Goose ISAF Team Racing World Championship enjoyed a relaxing breakfast on the terrace of the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) today while they were kept ashore for two hours. After several days with a strong southwesterly blowing the tide into Narragansett Bay, this morning's brisk northerly against a strong incoming current made for very rough seas. | Published : 28/09/2005
Big Breeze Rocks Day One NEWPORT, RI (September 26, 2005) – The action was fast and furious as the first day of racing for the 2005 Grey Goose ISAF Team Racing World Championship got underway today on Narragansett Bay in a strong southerly breeze (21 knots with gusts to 31). The field of play -- set between Rose Island and Goat Island by the New York Yacht Club Race Committee -- allowed the large crowd of spectators gathered on the northern end of Goat Island to see, and in some cases hear, everything taking place on the water. | Published : 27/09/2005
Team New Zealand Energizes Opening Ceremony NEWPORT, RI (September 25, 2005) – An enthusiastic crowd cheered and clapped as sixteen teams representing ten nations paraded across the lawn of the New York Yacht Club's Harbour Court this evening for the Opening Ceremony of the 2005 Grey Goose ISAF Team Racing World Championship. With regatta organizers, local dignitaries, and sailing officials from around the globe in attendance, the sailors carried in their national flags as a Dixieland band set the tone for the festivities. | Published : 26/09/2005

Change to Selection Procedures for Worlds There has been a misunderstanding within the Team Racing Group following the change of philosophy for selection for the team(s) to represent GBR at the Worlds from using specially-organised events, as we have done in the past, to those already in the calendar. A new notice of race has therefore been published and replaces the original one. The new notice reflects better the Group’s desire to involve as much of the UK team-racing community as possible.
Now, for example, all teams entering any of the qualifying events will automatically enter the qualification process.
I apologise for us not getting this right in the first place but we think it better to admit it as the changes should lead to a much better process.

New Forest Pirates Win Finals 2004 This year the UK Team Racing Association National Championships were held over the 3rd and 4th April at Spinnaker Club in the New Forest, one of the country's premier team racing venues. With three flights of matched Fireflies and the top 16 teams (reduced from the original 42 entries by numerous countrywide qualifiers) competition for the coveted title was hot. The event is the perfect opportunity for the top university teams to pitch their wits against the experienced old boys, the established clubs and the wild card entrants of 'old school' gatherings.

NFA Team Racing Championships 2003 The 50th RNVR will take place on 29-30 November at Spinnaker SC.
The NFA would especially like to encourage old and new teams to the event.
So if you thought you were a hot shot in the 60’s, why not dust off your Firefly in the shed, call up those old team-mates and see if you’ve still got what it takes.
Or if you have just got back into Uni team racing, please come and practice on the old timers.
If your Firefly looks like it won’t float, the NFA will organise boats to borrow, so there is no excuse.
